Title: The Corona Diaries

Poet: Gurjeevan Singh

Genre: Poetry

Publisher: Half Baked Beans Publishing

My Rating: 4/5 stars

*NOTE: I am extremely grateful to Half Baked Beans Publishing for sending me this book. However, this does not at all hinder my honest opinions regarding the book. This is a spoiler-free review. All opinions are solely mine.

‘The Corona Diaries’ is a collection of 21 poems written by Gurjeevan Singh. The poetry book is a short one (a 40-minute read) and highlights what we’re all experiencing while the Corona virus is lurking all over the world.

The poems deal with so many aspects of our lives that we’re going through right now. Be it introspection, nature’s way of “reclaiming land” and even political scenarios, Gurjeevan Singh has highlighted what’s going on inside and outside all of us.

This collection of poems is really a must-read. For me, it has been a very cathartic experience in the sense that I am able to view what’s going on without really being the one reciting it. The writing comes across as motivational and empathetic. I felt good and relieved while reading the poems. My favourite one is ‘Who Wished The Humanity Be Constrained’.

I would have enjoyed the poems even more if not every two lines ended with rhyming words. I think that made the poet play around a bit too much with the sentence structuring and it took away the essence of the stanzas a few times. A little copy-editing would have been great just to make sure that random words in the middle of sentences do not start with capital letters.

Here’s the line, from the poem ‘Who Wished The Humanity Be Constrained’, that I love:

“Is it trespassing or Nature’ Children reclaiming the lost territory”

~ Gurjeevan Singh, ‘The Corona Diaries’

How are you all doing? Hope you’re all fine and maintaining social distance. I am doing good, too.
