Bustle ‘Bout Books: Favourite First Lines

There are books which start with such beautiful lines. I decided to make this post about those wonderful phrases which grab your attention and you just cannot help diving into the books! Well, I can say that all these books got me caught in the story from the very first lines!

Don’t forget to tell me what your favourite first lines are!

Here are the books and their first lines that I am in love with:

• Inferno By Dan Brown:

I am the Shade.

Through the dolent city, I flee.

Through the eternal work, I take flight.

Doesn’t this just make you want to read it right away?

• To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee:

When he was nearly thirteen my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow.

Now, that’s a pretty good start to a book, eh? I loved the book so so much!

• Northanger Abbey By Jane Austen:

No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy would have supposed her born to be an heroine.

This line and this book! Most of you, by now, know that I am true Janeite! I did a review for Northanger Abbey and if you liked the first line, you definitely should check the review out!

• Mansfield Park By Jane Austen:

About thirty years ago, Miss Maria Ward, of Huntington, with only seven thousand pounds, had the good luck to captivate Sir Thomas Bertram, of Mansfield Park, in the county of Northampton, and to be thereby raised to the rank of a baronet’s lady, with all the comforts and consequences of an handsome house and large income.

Another one from a book by Jane Austen. There is something so royal and challenging about this long line. I absolutely adore the characters of this book!

• The Hunger Games: Mockinjay By Suzanne Collins

I stare down at my shoes, watching as a fine layer of ash settles on the worn leather.

Mockinjay is the last book in the series ‘The Hunger Games’. I loved the theme! The story had me intrigued right from the first line till the last one! This third book is definitely my favourite one in the series.
