NOSTALGIA STRIKES HARD
BY MEHER GANDHI
They say nothing lasts forever,
And now I know.
Time turns away,
As if to prove why it couldn’t last just another day.
All the times, I walk down a certain street,
I get lost in those moments sweet,
Never wanting to escape this black hole,
Forever remaining in these streets cold.
Nostalgia strikes hard,
Harder than could be realised.
All the flashes of the past,
That leave me hypnotized.
Rewind. Pause. Forward.
I keep swinging between and around;
Just to meet the old me,
Who was once storm-bound.
I wish I could believe,
What I knew not to be true.
I wish I could ease-breathe,
In times I felt gaiety to be untrue.
I am afraid of what I feel while reminiscing,
For I am not the person who winces over the gone days.
I often have a laugh with the present,
Even though, I don’t have ‘meet and greets’ with the past days.
But sometimes, I just cannot help;
Giving away all of my consciousness,
To the times, I could have lived,
To the glooms that didn’t fade.
And my fears,
They make me crumple up to the narrowest corner of my heart.
All these years,
I could’ve lived all the junctures that wouldn’t upstart.
So every time, I walk down these lanes,
I ponder over the memories I made.
I laugh at my own mistakes,
And anger over things I didn’t say.
Suddenly, I jerk my head from left to right,
To make sure I am not day-dreaming again.
The sunshine of today comes back bright,
I am back in this ship where I am the captain.
This ocean around me,
Reminds me of the the present day.
The sky above me,
Reminds me of the delay.
So I start steering this ship in the way,
I didn’t know existed.
I steer my ship in the way,
That to me isn’t haunted.
I know not how much time will it take,
For me to reach the unknown.
I don’t know how many reincarnations of this ship would it take,
To land me on the land not windblown.
And every time, these leaves shrink and fly away,
All I know is that,
‘Nothing lasts forever’ is the only truth till this day,
That’ll last forever.
