NOSTALGIA STRIKES HARD

BY MEHER GANDHI

They say nothing lasts forever,
And now I know.
Time turns away,
As if to prove why it couldn’t last just another day.

All the times, I walk down a certain street,
I get lost in those moments sweet,
Never wanting to escape this black hole,
Forever remaining in these streets cold.

Nostalgia strikes hard,
Harder than could be realised.
All the flashes of the past,
That leave me hypnotized.

Rewind. Pause. Forward.
I keep swinging between and around;
Just to meet the old me,
Who was once storm-bound.

I wish I could believe,
What I knew not to be true.
I wish I could ease-breathe,
In times I felt gaiety to be untrue.

I am afraid of what I feel while reminiscing,
For I am not the person who winces over the gone days.
I often have a laugh with the present,
Even though, I don’t have ‘meet and greets’ with the past days.

But sometimes, I just cannot help;
Giving away all of my consciousness,
To the times, I could have lived,
To the glooms that didn’t fade.

And my fears,
They make me crumple up to the narrowest corner of my heart.
All these years,
I could’ve lived all the junctures that wouldn’t upstart.

So every time, I walk down these lanes,
I ponder over the memories I made.
I laugh at my own mistakes,
And anger over things I didn’t say.

Suddenly, I jerk my head from left to right,
To make sure I am not day-dreaming again.
The sunshine of today comes back bright,
I am back in this ship where I am the captain.

This ocean around me,
Reminds me of the the present day.
The sky above me,
Reminds me of the delay.

So I start steering this ship in the way,
I didn’t know existed.
I steer my ship in the way,
That to me isn’t haunted.

I know not how much time will it take,
For me to reach the unknown.
I don’t know how many reincarnations of this ship would it take,
To land me on the land not windblown.

And every time, these leaves shrink and fly away,
All I know is that,
‘Nothing lasts forever’ is the only truth till this day,
That’ll last forever.

Hello to all the readers and writers out here! I am Meher Gandhi. I am a dreamer and a wanderer, dreaming of a world made of words and wandering in a land of my own scribblings. I am constantly scribbling my reveries and all the secrets I unearth while living, sometimes it’s on paper, most of the times, it’s mental notes. WordPress is a great platform to showcase the art of writing be it on the spot or else. I am loving this work of writing blogs, reading your blogs, commenting on them, receiving the likes, comments and valuable suggestions. It is all so fun! I am a teenager who loves to read and write. I am a positive person and so are my scribblings. If you want to connect with me then, head over to the contact page in the “my pages” section! Would you like to join me in for a walk in my land of scribblings? With love, Meher.

  1. good poem. there are similarities in tone. and interpretations are key. i would never discount yrs. after all these two poems brought us here, in the same light. ultimately, mine is about grieving over someone for a long time. someone special. thx for dropping in Meher. ill be sure to check in, again.

  2. It’s lovely, especially because of the direction of the ship at the end. Nostalgia becomes more and more powerful the older we get, and it needs keeping in check at times, for the waters are not always warm for many.

  3. God.. !! I literally got goosebumps while reading. . How much wisdom do you hold!!
You are like that golden sand,
which is so soft and warm..
It has the power to soak in all the rain..
You shine like a diamond band
And illumine our lives with your mighty brain!!

  4. This verse right here:

I know not how much time will it take,
For me to reach the unknown.
I don’t know how many reincarnations of this ship would it take,
To land me on the land not windblown.

Absolutely beautiful. It’s the written word of exactly how nostalgia makes you feel in the end.
This is kind of how I see it, nostalgia has its own ship that you can’t see coming through the fog, but when you finally do, it’s too late. It hits hard and fast. The only way to get away from it is to steer your own ship away.

    1. Yes, yes exactly!
I am so glad that you liked this poem and I appreciate your view point! We all need to be present in the present so as to make newer and happier memories rather than always being caught in thought about the past. We need to start steering the ship as soon as we realize the delay!
      Thanks for this lovely comment!

  5. I often think about the “old days” before I was struck with an illness that I have. Back then I felt fearless and free and full of endless possibilities. It was quite a while that I felt trapped from growing and experiencing new pleasures, but part of that entrapment was myself. We can’t always have what we used to have, but there are things in the present and future that we can. We just can’t be blind to them just because they’re different.

    1. I really appreciate this view-point. Yes, it is important to move on and be hopeful for the coming days. Change is inevitable and it’s better to get on terms with this fact as early as possible.
      Thanks for reading this poem!
